Macquarie Quant team’s annual Melbourne Cup tips have a pretty good track record, so it’s always worth hearing what it has to say.

Its ranking system is based on a range of factors, with an emphasis on horses that have performed well in similar conditions, horses that have competed well over the distance and horses that have had a recent win in Australia. The team also considers ‘cheapness’ (i.e. – what you get for the price).

With those factors in mind, here is every horse, ranked:

As you can see, the team is backing Best Solution in barrier six this year; a five-year old horse that recently won the Caulfield Cup. Other hot picks include Avilius, Marmelo and Youngstar.

On a final note, the team advises sticking to “lower risk, shorter priced” runners in 2018. If you’re planning to bet on an outsider, the quants recommend Zacada, Nakeeta, Vengeur Masque, Auvray and Chestnut Coat.

Good luck – and only spend what you can afford to lose!
