Today I’d like to talk to you about the best of warmer weather gimmicks: frozen alcohol. During this time of year, I vacillate wildly between wanting to make and consume all the boozy ice blocks, and railing against the whole genre as a cheap gimmick. (“Just eat a ice blocks and drink a cocktail like an adult,” is something I’ve muttered more than once.)
But, as with anything, there is a right way and a wrong way to execute boozy frozen treats. I’m sure you all have plenty of opinions on the subject, and I have plenty of questions:
-
First and foremost, do you have a favourite frozen way to consume alcohol? I am all about the granita, and I think they are vastly underrated. They are very easy to make, and are basically an adult version of a snow cone. Unlike ice blocks and ice cream, they are extremely forgiving, as you don’t have to worry too much about everything keeping its frozen form.
-
How do you feel about frosé? I think it’s an OK use for cheap pink wine, provided you add enough sugar, but freezing a really good rosé just mutes its flavour and makes me angry.
-
What about blended cocktails? I prefer my margaritas on the rocks and my daiquiris served up, but I’ll be damned if a frozen, blended negroni isn’t extremely good and special. The extreme cold tempers the bitterness, and I often drink them so quickly I get brain freeze.
-
Have you ever had a truly fantastic alcoholic ice blocks or ice cream? The sour cherry beer ice blocks I made a couple of years ago were tasty and easy to make, but I have yet to find an alcoholic ice cream I loved the texture and taste of.
-
Have you ever had a horrible frozen booze concoction? I have had some truly terrible frosé. It was all acid with no sweetness.
-
Are boozy milkshakes overrated? I tend to think that they are, not because they don’t taste great, but because all that fat slows down my buzz, and all that sugar makes my hangover worse. I do, however, enjoy a shot of Campari over coffee ice cream.
As always, feel free to answer as many or as few of the above as you like, and feel free to comment in any way you see fit on our topic. The only requirement is that your comment have something to do with at least somewhat frozen booze.

I make fruitsalads in summer for parties with vodka;
Apple, pair, pineapple, watermelon, rockmelon, orange and grapes. I add a small amount of ginger ale and vodka to it (more vodka than ginger ale) . The next day I get the remaining fruitsala and put it in a nutraninja with some ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream and process it. Soooooo tasty
You get drunk and it cools you down on a hot day.
What’s there not to like?
