How To Force Reboot The Latest iPhones

With the advent of the latest iPhones, the Home button has disappeared. And while there are new gestures for returning to the home screen – the swipe up from the bottom of the display to return to home and swipe top and hold to bring up the task switcher – some old gestures no longer work. For example, you can’t turn the latest iPhones off by holding down the side button and the old trick for doing a hard reboot by simultaneously pressing the Home and power buttons together for a few seconds are no longer viable. So, how do you restart one of the latest iPhones?

The process is pretty easy but, like many elements of iOS and Apple’s other operating systems, not very intuitive. This process applies to all the new iPhones released in 2017 and this year – the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and, presumably, the iPhone XR when it’s released in a few weeks.

  1. Press the volume up button.
  2. Press the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button for about 10 seconds. The display will suddenly shut off.

With older iPhones the usual process, of pressing the Home and side buttons simultaneously still applies.
