Google has finally unveiled its Android smartphones for 2018 – the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. There are a host of new hardware additions compared to last year’s phones, including a notched display on the XL. If you’re planning on grabbing a Pixel 3 or a Pixel 3 XL, here’s everything you need to know, including Australian pricing, release date and specifications.

Google Pixel 3 Specifications

If Google followed Apple’s naming convention, this would probably be an ‘S’ year. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL constitute a minor upgrade compared to the Pixel 2 range. The main improvements are to the display (which are slightly bigger than last years models), speakers (an impressive 40% louder) and camera (which introduces a range of new software tools including Top Shot and Night Sight.)

As previously reported, Active Edge is also back, which triggers custom actions when you squeeze the phone.

It's Official: Google Is Bringing Active Edge To The Pixel 3

The Google Pixel 3 leaks just keep on coming. This time, a video has surfaced on Google Japan's official YouTube channel that appears to confirm the return of Active Edge; one of Pixel 2's most unique features. (So it's less of a leak and more of a deliberate tease.) Here are the details!

Other than screen size, there’s not much separating these two phone models which share the same CPU, memory and native resolution – much like the iPhone XS and XS Max. One notable difference is the display-eating notch that only appears on the XL. (Yes, the rumours were true sadly.)

Pixel 3 And Pixel 3 XL Release Date

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are available to preorder from today in Australia via the Google Store. The phone will launch in-store on November 1.

Pixel 3 And Pixel 3 XL Pricing

The Pixel 3 starts at $1199 in Australia, while the XL begins at $1349. This is a significant markup on US pricing which starts at under $800.

If you’re keen to snap up this phone on a mobile plan, here are some solid bang-for-buck options. (Click on our interactive table to learn more.)

  • The Pixel 3 starts at $799 in the US, which is $1,124.23 in AUD (according to Google). Chuck in GST, and $1199 doesn’t sound so bad. Hardly a “significant markup”!

  • Be very careful when you pick up your new Pixel – make sure notification light works and above all make sure “ok google” opens the locked phone.

I have the last Pixel XL, it failed the above. Google the problems and you will see the internet is littered with the 2 faults. But more importantly, because these two issues are known by Google and Google does nothing at all to fix the problems….. do you really want a garbage 2018 pixel?
