The Five Best Adult Cartoons On Netflix

Say it with me now: Cartoons aren’t just for kids. We all know this by now, and even with the golden age of Adult Swim behind us, Netflix is leading the charge with a number of hilarious, crude and often weirdly insightful cartoons made for adult viewers. Here’s the 10 best shows you can watch right now.

Disenchantment

Synopsis: Princess duties call, but she’d rather be drinking. Free-spirited Bean exasperates the king as she wreaks havoc with her demon and elf pals.

Why You Should Watch It: It’s no Futurama, but there’s plenty of classic Matt Groening humor in Disenchantment, an animated comedy about a roughhousing, beer-swilling princess in a dysfunctional fantasy kingdom. Don’t expect a show that’s just full of cheap, empty laughs, though. Disenchantment knows how to bring the emotion at just the right moments.

Final Space

Synopsis: After meeting an adorable alien with planet-destroying capabilities, a human prisoner in space goes on an interstellar adventure to save the universe.

Why You Should Watch It: This space-themed animated comedy is also no Futurama, and even starts out a little obnoxious with its deluded and buffoonish protagonist Gary, but it soon starts to grow with surprising heart and depth. By the time you get to the last episode you’ll be wanting more, and you’ll definitely need a cookie.

Bojack Horseman

Synopsis: 1990s sitcom star BoJack Horseman is now a has-been with no love life and a permanent house guest. Then he gets a book deal — and a cute ghostwriter.

Why You Should Watch It: Bojack Horseman may be an oddball animated show about a retired TV star who also happens to be a talking horse, but don’t expect a lighthearted comedy. Bojack explores all the pitfalls and tragedies of modern life with more nuance than most serious TV dramas, and is 100% guaranteed to destroy you emotionally. While that might not sound like the best endorsement, I assure you that you need to watch this show, especially with Season 5 releasing soon.

Big Mouth

Synopsis: Teenage friends find their lives upended by the wonders and horrors of puberty in this edgy comedy from real-life pals Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg.

Why You Should Watch It: Crude, rude and all too relatable, Big Mouth is a show about puberty that definitely shouldn’t be watched by anyone who hasn’t been through puberty yet. Never shying away from the most awkward, embarrassing and disgusting parts of puberty, Big Mouth nevertheless uses its great cast of characters to tell a compelling coming of age storiy with real heart.

Devilman Crybaby

Synopsis: With demons reawakened and humanity in turmoil, a sensitive demon-boy is led into a brutal, degenerate war against evil by his mysterious friend, Ryo.

Why You Should Watch It: Devilman Crybaby brings stylised anime ultra-violence to Netflix, and does it pretty damn well. A unique offering that’s on the winning end of Netflix’s hit or miss original programming, it’s a must for anime fans.
