Avoid Updating To The iOS 12.1 Beta If You Pre-Ordered A New iPhone XS

iOS: If you pre-ordered an iPhone XS or XS Max and have been test-driving iOS 12 in beta form, you’ll want to avoid updating your device to iOS 12.1. Why not live on the edge? Because there’s no beta version of iOS 12.1 for the iPhone XS or XS Max.

When you get that shiny new phone in the mail (or after waiting in the world’s worst line at the Apple store), you won’t be able to restore your info from an older iPhone running the beta version of iOS 12.1, since that technically isn’t an option for the new devices, Reddit user Matuteg notes.

Apple has finally released iOS 12 to the non-developer masses – assuming you didn’t use a crafty trick to get your non-paying-self enrolled in the beta a few weeks ago.”]

The same issue happened this time last year with the iPhone X and iOS 11. Apple did eventually post the betas for the new phone, so it isn’t an issue that’s likely to last a long time, but it could be a problem if your new iPhone XS or XS Max arrives at 8:00AM and the betas aren’t posted until later in the day. You’ll have to wait to play with your new toy until after lunch.

If you haven’t yet updated to iOS 12.1, you can unenrol yourself from Apple’s Beta Software Program by tapping on your Settings app, followed by General, and then Profile. Select the beta profile, and then tap “Remove Profile”.
