Today we are taking two of my longtime favourite things — ginger and martinis — and combining them to make my new favourite thing.”]

The ti’ punch is a delicious Caribbean concoction made with rum, lime and syrup. One would think it couldn’t get much easier, but recently I was at a party and a friend of mine was complaining about the “hassle” of making simple syrup. (I told him you could make it the microwave; he politely pretended he would try that next time.)

Anyway. This got me thinking about how I could possibly streamline the beverage further. Obviously, the answer is adding some sort of sugary soft drink, which has syrup in it, transforming it into a spritz. To make one yourself, you will need:

  • 60ml of your favourite rum (I like using a blend)
  • 1/4 of a lime
  • Your favourite lime-flavoured soft drink (Stewart’s Key Lime is very nice)

Add the rum to a big ol’ wine glass or chalice, squeeze the juice out of the lime quarter, and chuck it in there. Add a bunch of ice, top with lime soft drink, and give it a slight stir. Throw a lime wheel in there if you need a garnish.
