iOS: The words “Apple” and “free” are a bit like oil and water — just ask anyone who works at the company and doesn’t get to partake in the Silicon Valley custom of free lunches and dinners for all. However, Father Cook is feeling generous this month, and Apple is offering up the excellent Obscura 2 camera app for free. Here’s how you get it (and save $7.99).
First, pull up the Apple Store app on iOS. If you’ve long since deleted that from your device, you can redownload it from the App Store here. Yes, the Apple Store app and the App Store app are two different things.
Once you’re in the Apple Store app, scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the app’s Discover page — you’ll be on it, by default, when you load the app. Then scroll up a bit until you see the darker “featured app” section, which starts with the larger “Exclusively for you” text and has Obscura 2‘s app icon, name and description within it. Tap anywhere within that section.
In the screen that appears, you’ll get a little more text that talks about Obscura 2. Ignore that, and tap on the big blue “Download now for free” button on the bottom. This will take you to the App Store on your device, and your redemption code for Obscura 2 will auto-populate on the page.
What I like about Obscura 2 is that the app presents a bunch of settings you can fine-tune for more precise photography, and they’re all pretty much within a finger’s reach. You can quickly tweak your iPhone’s ISO, shutter speed, exposure and focus. It’s also easy to add filters to shots you’re about to take, tweak your white balance, and add levels and grids to make sure you’re shooting straight on.
You have until September 25 to get your free copy of Obscura 2, so don’t dawdle.
