How To Disable Restaurant Recommendations In Google Maps

In recent months Google Maps has gotten pretty persistent about letting me know where there are restaurants it thinks I should try or new places opening up in my neighbourhood — and I hate it. As it turns out, I don’t really need the app to tell me what’s going on around me and with each hot tip I get more and more annoyed.

If you’re like me and would rather not get recommendations from the app there’s an easy way to turn those notifications off.

First, launch Google Maps and then press the hamburger button on the top left side of the search bar (the three lines stacked on top of each other). From there, select Settings from the sidebar menu and then Notifications.

Within the Notifications menu, you’ll want to select Discovery, which will bring up a list of all the fun and exciting things Google Maps can notify you of. From this menu, simply toggle off the ones you’d rather not get anymore. Or, you know, toggle them all off because they’re obnoxious. That’s it!

And if the type of notification that’s annoying you isn’t on the list, do a little poking around in the Notifications menu and see if you can find the offender. Maps has a zillion different ways it can notify you, but almost all of them can be toggled off if you want them to be.
