If You’re Having A Tough Day, Try the ‘1-2-3 Strategy’

We’ve all been there — your day is going poorly and it feels like it will never end. Worst of all, it feels like you can’t do anything to make it better. But that’s not entirely true. This strategy won’t solve all of your problems, but it’s a creative way to turn a rough day into a fulfilling one.

On Twitter, Caissie St. Onge, Emmy-nominated comedy writer and author of Jane Jones: Worst. Vampire. Ever., shared a helpful tip for those of us struggling to get through the day.

When things got you down, St. Onge says you should try following these three simple steps:

  1. Do something you have to do: You might feel a little better if you finally cross something off of your to-do list, especially if it doesn’t have anything to do with your normal workday. What thing will make you feel better when it’s done?
  2. Do something you want to do: Treat yo’ self. Want to read, watch a movie, get some ice cream, or go for a long walk in nature? Do it. Let yourself be happy for at least a little while.
  3. Do something for somebody else: Helping others makes you feel good — it’s been proven. It gives you a sense of purpose, and it gives you a chance to reflect on your own problems you might need help with. Also, it’s nice. Go be nice.

No matter how crappy your day is, this strategy will ensure that you’re somewhat productive, that you’re practising at least a little self-care, and that you’re making an effort to make the world a better place for somebody.

You’ll feel better, or at least make it through the rest of the day in one piece because you changed up your routine.
