Stay Tipsy With A Cherry Kalimotxo

Happy weekend, and welcome back to 3-Ingredient Happy Hour, the weekly drink column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. This weekend I wish to be slightly buzzed, and I wish to exert very little effort while achieving that goal.

My father (as always) wants me to “write about Scotch more”, so we’ll be honouring his wishes with this slightly fancy-pants, herbaceous variation on the Rob Roy.”]

To accomplish this, I need a drink that can be thrown together in a pretty haphazard fashion. I want something I can eyeball, and I want it to be fun. This kalitmotxo – which I make with the burgundy-hued, cherry-flavoured soft drink, Cheerwine – is all of that.

Cheerwine may be difficult to get your hands on in Australia, but you can always substitute it with the cherry-flavoured soft drink of your choice. Experiment! Have fun!

To play up the cherry factor, and keep the drink cold without diluting it, I added frozen cherries as our third ingredient. To make one for yourself, you will need:

  • Some quantity of dry-ish cheap, red wine (A blend is fine. Goon is fine. It’s all fine.)
  • An equal amount of cherry-flavoured soft drink
  • 4 or 5 frozen cherries per glass

Add the cherries to your drinking vessel, fill it up halfway with real wine, and then fill it up the rest of the way with cherry soft drink. Have a sip and enjoy.
