How Australia Consumes Its Porn [Infographic]

Australia loves its porn. Every year, the land Down Under contributes millions of hits to Pornhub. Despite having a smaller population, Australian IP addresses make us the seventh most active country on the site. To try and figure out how randy Aussies like it, Pornhub’s data scientists have ploughed into the numbers to figure out exactly what Australia looks for when we want our porn. (Some phrases NSFW.)

World beaters

Aussies actually beat the world in a few key metrics on Pornhub. 25 per cent of Aussie visits to Pornhub come from women, compared to the world average of 23 per cent. We “last” on the site for 9 minutes and 24 seconds, up compared to the world average of 9 minutes and 7 seconds.

Our favourite day to watch porn is on Monday, while our least favourite is Friday. We’re watching between 10pm and 11pm and we’re looking for everything from “lesbian” videos (as our most popular search) through to “outdoor” (our 10th most popular search).

Searches

Pornhub found something interesting about Australia’s search history: there isn’t a single search term that pertains to a specific nationality:

What’s really notable about Australia’s list of top searched terms on Pornhub is that it is completely devoid of any searches having to do with nationality. In the majority of countries we’ve studied, these types of terms tend to rank quite high, like in Italy where ‘italian’ is the top searched term, or in France where ‘french’ tops the list. ‘Asian’ does come in at 4th place on the list, but it’s clear that for the most part Aussies aren’t terribly interested in watching their own kind get it on.

Instead, search terms like “lesbian”, “step mom” (note the American spelling) and “teen” come in as first to third place, respectively. “Hentai” and “cartoon” searches are also popular in Australia, ranking sixth and 12th respectively.

Aussies aren’t searching for Australian porn stars either. We’re all looking for Kim Kardashian, Mia Khalifa and Lisa Ann, instead.

Sport

Australia is a nation of sport nuts, and research found that traffic to the world’s biggest porn site actually dropped during big sporting events.

Take last year’s AFL grand final between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn, as an example. Ahead of the game’s kick-off at 2:30pm, traffic to Pornhub from Australia dropped 15 per cent against the Saturday daily traffic average. Interestingly after the match had concluded at 5pm, traffic began to spike back up above daily averages, finishing the day 1 per cent up against the Saturday daily traffic average.

Likewise for the State Of Origin NRL match between NSW and QLD in May this year, Pornhub recorded a 19 per cent traffic slide against the Wednesday daily average when the game kicked off at 8pm. Traffic quickly picked back up throughout the game, however, and after its conclusion, traffic to Pornhub increased by 3 per cent against the Wednesday daily traffic average by 11pm.

Holidays

There’s nothing better than a holiday in Australia. We love to go outdoors, and as a result, we’re watching less porn.

Pornhub found that traffic slides down by 52 per cent on days like New Year’s Eve, 28 per cent on Christmas day and 7 per cent down on Australia Day.

Interestingly, the holidays that get us watching more porn are Good Friday (+2 per cent increase on trend) and Easter Monday (+7 per cent increase on trend).

State-By-State

The most interesting part of Pornhub’s research is that it’s broken down into different geographical regions. Let’s go around the states to see how you all like it.

New South Wales

New South Wales plays host to Australia’s biggest city, Sydney. Sydneysiders last for 9 minutes and 21 seconds on Pornhub, and we’re looking for everything from “lesbian” results through to “step mom”, “massage”, “cartoon” and “step sister”.

It’s worth mentioning that most of the searches and favourite porn stars are the same across Australia’s capital cities. Sydney’s only difference in searches was a number two result for “asian” searches.
