Oppo just announced its brand new flagship phone in Paris — the Find X. It includes some interesting design choices, the most significant being its stealth camera that only pops up when you turn the phone on or open the camera app.
Oh also, it has 3D facial modelling that you can use to shop online.
The Find X has a 25-megapixel front facing camera and 16-megapixel and 20-megalpixel rear cameras. This is an interesting choice — you don’t get a lot of front facing cameras that are better than the rear. It’s very much an Oppo thing, but there may be an added reason this time around, and it relates to security.
The Find X doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner like many of its competitors in market. Instead, it uses a 3D facial scanner that utilises the front-facing camera for biometric authentication. It also includes a 3D Structured light module, which can project 15,000 dots to build a complete 3D model of a user’s face, with millimeter-level accuracy.
Just went I felt uncomfortable enough with the Samsung Galaxy’s iris scanner, along comes Oppo wanting us to holds its beer.
The 3D facial recognition also supports mobile payments. Yes, that means you’ll be able to pay for stuff online with your face through the use of Alibaba’s Alipay.
But hey, maybe you won’t worry about that when you find out that the AI will also make your selfies better! The Find X’s Smart Selfie Capture function will analyse the 3D model of your face to look at your face shape and features so it can provide feedback so you can up your selfie game.
Oppo has also followed in the footsteps of Huawei and LG’s flagships by offering AI Scene recognition for photographs which supports over 20 different scenarios, including food and pets.

In regards to specs the Find X has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo.
It has a 3,730mAh battery (which is higher than some of the other 2018 flagships, including the Galaxy S9+) and includes VOOC fast charging. The Find X is a dual-SIM phone that’s also globally compatible — I was able to use a T-Mobile SIM in the demo unit to grab an LTE signal in New York City.
