You Can Now Mute Your Annoying Instagram Friends

We all have that one friend who’s insufferable on social media. If you’re tired of seeing your Instagram feed cluttered with annoying memes, gloating status updates, or endless selfies, the solution seems obvious: Unfollow them. If only it were that simple.

Instagram makes it easy to see who’s following you and who isn’t, and if that friend finds out what you did, your savvy social media move could spill out into a real-life argument. Thankfully, Instagram now offers a second option: Muting annoying people so you can keep up social pleasantries without seeing their posted content.

The next time you see something annoying in your feed, just tap on the three dots in the top-right corner of the post. Assuming you have the latest Instagram update, which might a few days to reach everyone, you should see a new menu with the option to “Mute.” Tap on it, and you can decide whether to mute everything that account posts (including Stories) or just their public images.

Don’t worry: You can still chat with these people over Instagram’s direct messaging feature even after you mute them. And you can still check out their posts by visiting their profile page – if you need to like the occasional photo to keep up appearances. They will have no way to see that you muted their accounts, aside from spot-checking you with a quick “Did you see what I just Instagrammed” conversation the next time you two hang out. Good luck with that.
