Find Stories And Messages In Snapchat’s Latest Redesign

Earlier this year, Snapchat rolled out a drastic redesign meant to make the confusing social network a little easier for newcomers to understand. But the new layout flopped and now Snapchat is admitting defeat with a second redesign that undoes almost all of those changes.

Here’s what you need to know about using the re-redesigned Snapchat.

How to Install the New Update

Snapchat’s latest update first arrived last Friday, so it should be available on most devices by now. If you don’t have it yet try closing the app and relaunching it, or check your app store (iOS or Android) to see if it’s available there.

It’s possible the new design is still rolling out to some people. So if it doesn’t show up yet just hang tight and give it a little more time.

How to Find Stories and Messages

One of the biggest problems with Snapchat’s previous redesign was that it lumped everything from your friends (public Stories and private Messages) into a single page. This latest update does a pretty good job of fixing that by reverting to the old layout.

From the app’s homepage, swipe left to find the new Friends page. Here you can see all your private conversations, group chats, and any Snaps sent directly to you. This is also where you’ll go to add new friends.

To see public Stories, swipe right from the homepage. At the top of the page you should see a row of Stories shared by your actual friends. Just below that are your Subscriptions (any celebrities you follow), and below that you’ll find the Discover section (well-produced content from media companies and brands that you’ll probably just ignore).

Even though you have to opt in for your Bitmoji to appear on the map, this is a great time to review your Snapchat privacy settings (and wave goodbye to the Snap Map, if you aren’t interested).”]

How Auto-Advance Works

When Snapchat first added auto-advance, it turned watching Stories into a more laid back experience. As soon as one Story was finished the next would play automatically (albeit with the occasional ad jammed in between).

With the first big redesign, Snapchat added preview screens in between each Story so you wouldn’t accidentally watch a Snap from your ex or a friend you might be feuding with (that may sound dumb, but remember that everyone can see who’s watching their stories). The new update keeps those preview screens, but only for your friends’ Stories. Posts from celebrities and brands will play automatically.

If you’re worried about watching unwanted Snaps this is a good thing, but if you’d rather just sit back and see some Stories it’s kind of annoying. Overall, though this update feels like a step in the right direction that should make using Snapchat a lot easier for the most part — at least until the next redesign.
