You might see teaching your kid how to ride a bike as a rite of passage, a sacred experience that culminates with the grand moment of you wiping tears as Little Adele or Brady pedals into youthful freedom. That’s great. But you also might look at the task with dread — all you can envision is an aching back for you, tears for your kid and misery all around. For the latter group, there is no shame in signing your kid up for bike riding lessons.
I recently heard parents talking about kids’ bike riding workshops offered by REI and other companies, and immediately thought, “What? You mean this is something you can outsource?!” You can, and many do. Some swear that after weeks or months of struggling to teach their children on their own, they finally sent them to a class and within hours, those children were training-wheels free. Instructors might use methods you may not have heard of, and for a lot of kids, there’s something about being in structured program (taught by someone who is not Mum or Dad) that pushes them out of their comfort zone.
Here are some places that can teach your kid how to ride a bike.
- Kids on Bikes offers bike riding lessons in the wider Sydney region. Depending on the type of course, bikes may be provided or not. The company also provides private cycling classes for kids and adults, so check them out for details of when and where to ride.
- BikeWise are another company offering bike riding courses, specifically for city cycling, at a price of $150 for two hours.
- There are lots of local bike riding programs for kids — check out Ride A Bike Right in Adelaide; AustCycle who have providers in WA, VIC, NSW and SA; and PedalPower in the ACT.
