Wear Jeans On The First Date

Wear Jeans On The First Date

There’s a lot of pressure to stand out on a first date, and that stress inevitably carries over to your wardrobe choices. But there’s no need to have a silly outfit changing montage before you head out to meet someone for the first time. Comfortable, casual staples like a good pair of jeans are all you need.

Assuming they’re not filled with holes or torn to shreds, jeans are always a safe bet in most social situations. Everyone has a pair and nobody really judges people who wear them. In a survey conducted by Mulberry’s Cleaners, respondents overwhelmingly felt that jeans were the perfect option for date numero uno. For guys, a majority of both men and women agreed that jeans are the best option for first date attire. For gals, about half of the men and women asked thought jeans were just dandy as well. Basically, jeans are expected, and that’s a good thing. The focus should be on each other, not your pants.

Besides, the “first date” isn’t really a date anyway — it’s more of an interview. Most “first dates” involve meeting at a coffee shop, bar, or cafe to get a feel for each other’s vibe. You’re trying to see if there’s chemistry and making sure the other person isn’t a weirdo that wants to eat your calves; not invoking a super romantic atmosphere. Wearing revealing clothing or showing up in a suit and tie can give them the wrong idea, and might even scare them off. It’s a casual environment, so it’s good to keep things relaxed. It’s ok to dress a little up if you’re worried, but don’t go overboard.

Now, when I say “jeans,” I don’t necessarily mean actual jeans. I’m not a shill for big denim. Maybe you hate jeans, or don’t have a pair — I don’t know what’s in your closet! By “jeans” I mean typical clothing items you feel comfortable in. If you like trousers, or skirts, or whatever, wear them. As long as it’s semi-casual and wearing it doesn’t make you look like you have the flu, you’re good to go. What matters most is that you’re comfortable and dressed for the location. If it’s going to be chilly, wear a jacket. If you think you might be doing some walking, wear shoes that won’t wreck your feet. When it comes to that first in-person interaction, stop worrying about how you’ll look and focus on how you’ll feel. Being comfortable means you can be more present and confident, and that will make you way more attractive than wearing the perfect button-up shirt or fancy dress. So, when in doubt, wear jeans — whatever that may mean to you.
