Tomorrow is Chinese New Year, which means a bunch of happy kids will be receiving “red packets” filled with money from their family elders. If you need to pick up some of these distinctive red envelopes for young relatives, here's where to get them free.
If you're under a certain age, the best part of Chinese New Year is definitely the red packets. Known as 'hongbao/ang pow' in Mandarin and 'lai see' in Cantonese, these are basically gifts of hard cash which are dispensed to kids in distinctive red envelopes.
Most Chinese grocery stores stock red packets in the lead up to Chinese New Year. While these envelopes are cheap, they aren't free. If you're an impulse shopper, you might also end up buying a bunch of groceries you don't really need.
Instead, simply head into your local Commonwealth Bank branch and ask for some Chinese New Year red envelopes. Each year, CBA will happily give them away to anyone who asks. (You don't need to be a customer.)
If you have a large brood of kids hungry for red packets, at least you can save a few bucks on the envelopes this way. Just don't get talked into signing up for a home loan or something.
You might be able to get the same treatment from other banks though we haven't personally tested this. Feel free to let is know in the comments!
