Samsung Galaxy S9 And S9+: Australian Pricing, Specs And Availability

It feels like it was only a few months ago that Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note8 smartphone. That's because it was only a few months ago. Nevertheless, a new flagship from Samsung is always cause for excitement, and the S9 and S9+ are looking pretty damn fine indeed. Here are the specifications for both phones, along with Australian pricing and specifications.

Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+: What's New (And What's Not)

The Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with a 5.8-inch Infinity Display boasting a native resolution of 2960x1440 pixels. That's not terribly different to the S8 screen - in fact, it's identical - but seeing as this remains one of the best smartphone displays on the market we're willing to let it slide. Memory is also unchanged at 4GB.

The S9+ comes with a larger 6.2-inch display which puts it in the same size range as the monolithic Galaxy Note7. It has an identical native resolution to the S9. It's powered by 6GB of RAM.

Both models run Android 8 on Octa-core processors (2.7 GHz Quad + 1.7 GHz Quad.)

Other noteworthy features include IP68 dust and water resistance (up to 30 minutes submerged in fresh water), inbuilt NFC, Corning Gorilla Glass on the front and back, Samsung Pay, wireless charging functionality, biometric authentication with iris scanning and MicroSD slots. Both phones come with the latest version of Bixby; Samsung's voice-controlled AI assistant. You also get some high-end AKG earphones in the box.

This years colour choices are a little different. In addition to "Midnight" Black and "Coral" Blue, there's also a Lilac Purple option. However, you'll need to buy the 256GB model direct from Samsung if you want the new colour. Odd.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Camera

The S9 and S9+ come equipped with dual rear-facing 12-megapixel cameras. The S9+ also packs in two lenses; a step up from the Galaxy S8+, which made do with a single lens camera.

If Samsung can be believed, its new camera is much faster and more reliable in a variety of photographic situations. The new image sensor is purportedly 28 per cent more effective in low-light environments and photos boast 30 per cent noise reduction compared to its predecessor. There's also a 960fps Super Slo Mo mode and revamped multi-frame image processing. If you've already got an S8 then this is probably the most intriguing reason to upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Battery

The S9 comes with a 3000mAh battery while the S9+ has a slightly larger 3500mAh battery; the same exact capacities that were offered with the S8. There's been talk about the S8+ lasting up to 1.5 days in-between charges, even during heavy usage, but we've yet to test these claims out.

Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ Australian availability

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be available to pre-order from today and will go on sale in Australia on March 16. To stay notified, you can register your interest on Samsung's website. Most Aussie telcos have their pre-order offers up already. (We'll have a full roundup of S9 and S9+ plans later in the day.)

Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ Australian pricing

The 64GB Galaxy S9 will cost $1199 to buy outright in Australia. That's identical to the S8's pricing and a bit of a glove slap at Apple which deigned to charge Aussies $1579 for the iPhone X. There's also a 256GB version which goes for a slightly more hefty $1349.

As you'd expect, the larger S9+ comes with a higher price tag - you can get the 64GB and 256GB version in Australia for $1349 and $1499, respectively.

You might be able to shave a few bucks off the RRP by buying from online retailers like Kogan, but expect any savings to be miniscule. For the time being, these are the prices you will need to pay if you opt to buy outright. On the plus side, the S8 should drop further in price any day now.

Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ pre-order gift

If you pre-order the S9 or S9+ before March 16, Samsung will throw in a free Samsung Convertible Fast Wireless Charger valued at $119. Other telcos are reportedly offering their own pre-order bundles.

Don't mean to be that guy, but you may want to update the title to S9 and S9+, not S8 and S8+. :o)

I know you were posting this early, but, you might want to check that headline? :D

Uh... Title might need to be changed to S9 hahaha

It's okay Chris, blame it on a lack of coffee :P

Bloody hell. Thanks for the headsup - time for a V injection, methinks.
