Do you have room in your house (and heart) for a new family member? The RSPCA is bringing back its 'Clear The Shelters' initiative in a bid to save thousands of unwanted pets from destruction. From February 23 to February 25 pet adoption fees will be capped at just $29.
The RSPCA's Clear The Shelters drive is being held in all states and territories with the exception of Western Australia and Tasmania. The $29 adoption fee applies to pretty much all animals great and small - from mice and ducks to ponies and horses.
However, most RSPCA shelters will be sticking to cats and dogs which is probably all that you're interested in anyway. (Don't try bringing a horse into your studio apartment; it will end badly.)
All dogs and cats in the Clear The Shelters scheme are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated according to breed regulations. The usual adoption procedures still apply, which you can read up on here.
In addition to visiting your local RSPCA shelter, you can also see what's on offer via the Adoptapet website. Here's the spiel from the RSPCA:
The Adoptapet website lets you view the many wonderful pets waiting for adoption at RSPCA locations across Australia. All animals have been health and behaviour assessed by the RSPCA and are ready for their new homes. Dogs and cats are also desexed, microchipped and vaccinated to help give them the best possible fresh start.
It goes without saying that you should only consider this if you're ready for pet ownership and have suitable amenities for the critter you're keen to adopt. Take a look at the available pets here!
