The next time you get your hair cut or your eyebrows shaped, don’t make the mistake of trying to describe what you want. Instead of saying “just a trim” and hoping your stylist knows what that means, pull out a selfie and show your stylist exactly what you want to look like.

Showing your stylist a selfie — as opposed to, say, a celebrity photo — solves two problems:
- It gives your stylist a visual reference of what you’re expecting from the appointment.
- If you’re getting a haircut, a selfie helps the stylist understand how you usually wear your hair.
Even if you’re looking for a brand new style, showing your stylist a selfie or two can give them a sense of what your hair and brows usually look like and what you’re hoping to change. Also — and this is for all of us who asked for “the Rachel” or “the Meg Ryan” back in the day — a selfie proves that the look you want can actually be achieved with your hair.
One more tip: don’t make your stylist wait while you scroll through your photos. Before your appointment, find the photos you want and screenshot them. That way, they will be the first photos your stylist sees when you open your photo app.
