The Artist’s Space-Saving Workspace

Motion graphics designer and cinematographer Tyler Sparks sent over this shot of his space-saving workspace in his Brooklyn apartment, and we love it. It’s a great space to do work, uses vertical space well, and has plenty of personality as well as tools for productivity.

Tyler showcases his work over at his web site if you’re interested in what he creates from that corner workspace, including videos like this gem that he sent over when I spoke to him. When I asked him more about the space, he explained:

This home office workstation is used for motion graphics and editing using Adobe software. The desk is a SIS SC standing or sitting adjustable desk. In the photo you see a large Wacom Intuos 3 tablet, microsoft trackball mouse. The pair of monitors are NEC MutliSync LCD2470WVX 24″ and are colour calibrated. The output wall mounted monitor is a Samsung 32″ TV connected via HDMI via a BlackMagic HDMI video output PCI card. Also there are Bose 2.1 speakers for audio monitoring.

My wife and I are both editors, and I do a lot of motion graphic work for the advertising industry as well as shooting documentary films.

Speaking of colour calibration, Tyler has another shot of his desk where he’s calibrating the colour here. While the iPad on the desk is a neat trick that I think a lot of people will understand and identify with, I particularly like the 32″ TV on the wall above his workspace for anything and everything he may want to keep an eye on without cluttering up his actual working desktops. I’d probably use it for video, streaming, or just any other window I’d like to monitor without getting in the way of the work I have to do.

As for the tech he uses to get all that done? Tyler continued:

That’s a pretty nice rig, with plenty of horsepower and storage to get his work done. If you like it as much as we do, head over to his Flickr page (linked below) and let him know how great it is — and that we sent you!
