Synology Keeps Adding To NAS Range With New Two Bay DS218+

Synology’s new DiskStation the DS218+ is 2-bay storage solution that’s ideal for home offices and small businesses. It boasts a dual-core processor with AES-NI encryption acceleration and a transcoding engine, providing high-speed file transfers and supporting real-time 4K transcoding.

I’ve been using various Synology NAS units for a few years now and two things stand out for me – performance and reliability. I’ve used mine to stream content from Plex libraries as well as running them as backup locations and for sharing large files.

The DS218+ supports transcoding of up to two concurrent H.264/H.265 4K video streams and features media management applications. While that’s great for the home, it’s useful for businesses engaged in creative work as external clients and visitors can get access to content.

For small businesses, Synology’s Collaboration Suite of the DS218+ integrates Synology Office, Calendar and Chat allowing organisations to manage and control their relevant content and, if you have CCTV surveillance at your home or business, the Synology Surveillance Station is a reliable private-security solution that can support multiple IP cameras connected to the DS218+ enabling real-time monitoring.

All of this is managed with Synology’s DSM software which puts an easy-to-use GUI in front of the all the features, making it easy to manage.
