Use A Label Maker To Keep Track Of Measurements In Your Home

Home improvements often mean moving things around, which involves measuring to make sure everything fits. You might jot your window or wall measurements on paper when you move into a new space, but if you want to change something later on, you’ll probably have to take the time to measure again. Luckily it’s easy to immortalise your numerical handiwork: just set it and forget it with a label maker.

The idea came to me after an impromptu trip to IKEA for some knick-knacks that led me to to make a risky decision: I purchased a TV stand without knowing if it would fit. My luck paid off there, but I didn’t make the same gamble on a much-needed pair of blinds because I didn’t know the size of my windows.

Label Every Wall You’ve Got

To avoid the problem again, I decided to measure twice and label once, putting a sticker on everything with dimensions that I might care about.

I proceeded to measure my walls, type out the results, print them out and stick the labels in inconspicuous locations. My living room wall labels are behind my TV on a corner of floor moulding, with the same label near the opposing couch. The window measurements are going under the bottom sash and door labels are being placed on the bottom of the door’s outer moulding. Closet measurements go on the bottom half of the door.

Make Your Labels Small and Hidden

Since it’s just a label with a number on it, it’s small enough to fit anywhere without drawing my eye. If your label maker leaves wider margins than normal, just adjust it in its settings or grab some scissors and start cutting. I dropped the font down to a smaller size so it’d be less noticeable until I actually need it.
