The Nest range of Google-friendly smart home products have just launched in Australia. Here’s everything you need to know about the products, including Australia pricing and availability.
One of the chief stumbling blocks in building a smart, connected home is the setup process. If you’re not technically savvy, making everything work in harmony (or work at all) can be a daunting task. Nest attempts to simplify the process with a plug-and-play design that play nice with Android devices. If you can work a Google Chromecast, the Nest lineup shouldn’t provide you with any problems.
Here are the chief Nest products launching in Australia, and how much they cost.
Nest Protect (RRP: $189)
The Nest Protect is a smart smoke alarm that boasts an industrial-grade smoke sensor and oodles of inbuilt software that allows it to self-monitor its battery and provide soft lighting when it detects movement at night. As with the rest of the Nest range, the Nest Protect can be controlled through your phone.
The Nest Protect is available to buy today from iSelect and its partners. .
Nest Cam Indoor / Nest Cam Outdoor (RRP: $319.95)
The Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor are microUSB-powered security cameras with inbuilt Wi-Fi. They boast a 130-degree wide-angle lens and a 1080p HD image sensor designed to work in all lighting conditions. Both have the ability to zoom up to 8x digitally and provide continuous video capture which is stored in your Nest account for three hours. This can be boosted to 30 days if you pay for a Nest Aware account. (More on this below.)
Like the Nest Protect, they come with a microphone and speaker for two-way communication. (Nest reckons this works up to six metres away from the camera.) Footage can be uploaded at 360p, 720p or 1080p with the bit-rate dynamically adjusted depending on what else is happening on your home network. The Outdoor is IP65 rated and comes with a magnetic puck for easy wall installation.
The Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor are available to buy today from iSelect and its partners.
Nest Aware ($14 per month)
Nest Aware is a cloud-based subscription service for people with multiple Nest security cameras. It provides a three-hour free snapshot history and the ability to pre-select activity zones (like doors or windows) for alerts on your phone. You can also add on extra cameras for 50 per cent of the original asking price for each extra subscription.
Nest Aware offers two price points: $14 for 10 days or $30 for 30 days. This gives you the ability to only use the service when you’re on holidays or are trying to capture suspicious activity.
Nest Aware is available to purchase today from iSelect and its partners.

Thermostat is conspicuously absent, as is availability from the Play store. Strange way to go….
The thermostat won’t generally work here, as it requires wiring that doesn’t exist in Australia.
Nest aren’t planning on selling the thermostat from the start. So basically, they are selling a video camera. I dare say no-one’s going to buy the smoke detector as we all have them already.
And you are wrong there very wrong.
Hey Boxie. Which sentence is wrong?
The Nest Protect smoke alarms are approved and certified to Australian Standard AS3786:2014 however I can’t find them listed on the http://activfire.gov.au/ website and there is a disclaimer that the “voice messages do not comply with AS 3786:2014, Section 4.21”.
You must be also careful, since I believe the battery powered version is not compliant with the Queensland laws as I believe the batteries are removable and will not last 10 years.
