Video: Some dogs need a little extra warmth during chilly weather in the form of a doggie jumper or jacket. You can turn an old jumper into one for your dog with a little sewing, and this video shows you how it’s done.
The first thing you should do is create a pattern by measuring your dog (skip to 01:00 in the video above to see how). You may need someone to hold them still or distract them with treats, but once you have the measurements you can use the same pattern over and over.
A jumper that has a bit of stretch is best so your dog can move around more easily. If the jumper material isn’t very stretchy, you can make it a little looser fitting. Lay your pattern on top of the jumper with the edge that will run across your dog’s back lined up with the bottom of the jumper; this saves you from having to hem that portion of the sweater. Trace the pattern onto the sweater, then cut it out. Add sleeves if you want by cutting them out from the cuff of the sweater. Sew the top and bottom of the sweater together and add a neck by reusing the neck of the sweater. You can use this same technique on old T-shirts. The video above also shows you how to add a hood.
Besides warming your dog up, this is a great way to repurpose jumpers that are worn out, stained or ripped rather than tossing the whole thing into the trash.
