Winter storms are a colossal pain in the bum. Depending on the severity, they can also cause extensive property damage and loss of human life. If you're anticipating brutal weather in the months ahead, this infographic checklist will help to keep your and loved ones safe when Old Man Winter goes apeshit.

The infographic below was compiled by heating company JK Mechanical. It breaks down the basics of winter home safety as well as the steps you should take during weather-based emergencies. A lot of these tips are aimed at places with especially harsh winters, but there's still plenty of sound advice here for anyone who finds themselves stranded at home during an emergency or natural disaster.

For example, it estimates that you should store one gallon (3.7 litres) of water per person, which should be enough to last three days. Likewise, it is important to have plenty of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food on hand. Check out the full list of tips below.

    Maybe needed for the US but this is less than useless for winter in Oz. Some of it is great for cyclone season in the North.
