Veeam Announces Updated Office 365 Backup And Faster VM Recovery

During the opening keynote on Partner Day at this year’s VeeamON event, Danny Allan announced the release of Veeam Backup for Office 365 v 1.5. Allan, who is Veeam’s VP Cloud and Alliances Strategy, says the updated product supports multi-repository and multi-tenant architecture. This enables protection of larger Office 365 deployments with a single installation.

Veeam Backup for Office 365 gives businesses a way to backup their cloud-data to a local data centre. The updated product fits into Veeam’s strategy of providing business continuity services for businesses whether the use on-prem systems, cloud, hybrid, SaaS or IaaS architectures.

In addition to the updated Backup for Office 365, Veeam also announced Veeam Availability Console V2 and Veeam Availability Suite V10. Allan said the update to Availability Suite takes advantage of new Vmware APIs that let Veeam reduce recovery point following an incident from minutes to seconds. This because Veeam can now intercept I/O calls at the hypervisor layer and replicate those rather than relying just on periodic snapshots.

A recurring theme through today’s keynote was the changed business landscape and how we can no longer operate when the recovery time after an incident is measured in hours. Snapshot technology reduced recovery times for some incidents from days or hours to minutes.

What we’re seeing now from Veeam and its competitors is a drive to reduce that time to seconds.
