This Is How Much Vaginal Discharge Is Normal

Video: It’s totally normal to have vaginal discharge, a sort of whitish fluid, showing up in your underwear (if you are a person who has a vagina). But if you’re seeing a lot of it, you may wonder, how much is OK? In this video, gynaecologist Dr Jen Gunter demonstrates.

She squirts 4mL of water, dyed yellow with iodine, so you can see what the amount looks like. Anything up to this amount in 24 hours is totally normal. She also has photos of roux smeared onto a pad, in case the water is too, you know, watery to get the point across.

If you do leak more than 4mL in a day, the cause could be an infection, a stuck tampon, or other things that need a professional’s attention. And if discharge of any amount comes with irritation, odour, itch or pain, definitely get it checked out. Otherwise, just know that you’re totally normal, and that your ob/gyn has seen it all before.
