How To Safely Keep Track Of Ideas While Driving With IFTTT

Ever get epic ideas while you’re in the car? If so, you’ve probably struggled to figure out how to jot down those ideas without swerving into oncoming traffic. It can be a distraction for sure, but one Redditor has a useful suggestion that involves one of our favourite tools: IFTTT.

If This, Then That is an incredible tool that lets you connect two apps and automate certain tasks between them. Want to automatically turn your calendar events into Todoist tasks? IFTTT can help with that. Want to automatically send someone a text on their birthday? You can do that with IFTTT, too. The possibilities are nearly endless and you can browse their applets here.

Over at Reddit, though, one user points to an IFTTT applet that can help you keep track of thoughts and ideas while you’re in the car: Siri to Trello. You connect Siri to Trello, then activate the applet so that you can use voice-activated Siri to add something to your Trello board. If you don’t use Trello, you could tweak the recipe and connect it to your task app or note-taking app of choice.

And if you don’t have Siri, you can connect IFTTT to Google Assistant for Android. For example, here’s an applet that lets you save something in Evernote using Google Assistant. Again, if you don’t use Evernote, just tweak the “then that” part of the applet to the app you do use.

Of course, you could always use the default note-taking feature that comes with Google Assistant or Siri (Google Assistant defaults to Google Keep, for example). If you don’t use these defaults, though, IFTTT is a useful way to switch to a tool or app you actually use. This way, you can keep your eyes on the road while ensuring your best thoughts and ideas are saved where you want them saved.
