A belated May the Fourth be with you, my nerds, and welcome back to 3-Ingredient Happy Hour, the weekly drink column featuring super simple, yet delicious libations. We’re drinking a little early this week, in honour of a most hallowed day.

There is no shortage of punny, Star Wars-themed libations out there, but most of them involve a lot of food colouring. That wouldn’t be such a terrible thing, except we’re working with a limited number of ingredients, and I don’t want to waste one on dye.
This beverage is an homage to a particularly controversial edit made to the 1977 film, and it features smoky mezcal because guns smoke, you guys. I had one of my favourite bartenders at my favourite bar mix it up for me, but you don’t have to be a career mixologist to make this beverage. In addition to smoky mezcal, there’s a slightly bitter, slightly sweet amaro in there, for a drink that’s just as complex as our favourite space cowboy. You will need:
- 30mL smoky mezcal (We used Vida. Hilariously, their slogan is “Sip it. Don’t shoot it.”)
- 30mL Amaro Nonino
- A strip of orange zest
Grab a lowball glass and put one big cube down in there. Add your booze, give everything a good stir (about 15 seconds) and squeeze the strip of zest over your drink to express the oils before tossing it in. Sip and try not to shoot any Rodian bounty hunters.
