Women account for around 26 per cent of visitors to Pornhub, according to the site’s latest insights. That’s enough for a noticeable drop in traffic to be evident during the Women’s March in January.
But how does the way women consume and access porn differ to their male counterparts?
Other than a standout statistic being women are far less likely to use Internet Explorer (c’mon, guys) the results of Pornhub’s “Women and Technology” survey reveals Apple products are the tech of choice for the ladies.
In news that will surprise precisely no-one, using a smartphone to access porn has become far more commonplace in the last few years. About 72 per cent of worldwide traffic to Pornhub comes from smartphones and tablets.
“But mobile use is actually much higher with women than men,” Pornhub reveals. “As of February 2017, nearly 80 per cent of female traffic comes from mobile, compared to about 69 per cent for men”.
Mobile growth has been similar for both genders, but women have remained around 10 per cent higher than men since 2014.
71 percent of female traffic to Pornhub comes from smartphones, 8 per cent from tablets and 21 per cent desktop. Proportionately, women are -34 per cent less likely to use desktop computers to than men, but 16 per cent more likely to use phones and +10 per cent more for tablets.
When it comes to mobile operating systems, 53 per cent of women are using Android and 45 per cent Apple iOS. Women prefer Apple based tech with a +5 per cent increase in iOS popularity, and a -3 per cent decrease in Android compared to men.
On mobile devices, Chrome is more popular with 54 per cent of female traffic, and 34 per cent going to Apple’s Safari. Proportionately, women are -3 per cent less likely to use Chrome but +9 per cent more likely to be using Safari compared to men. On Android based devices, women are +6 per cent more likely to be using the default Android browser than men.
And wahat exactly are women watching? Gay porn, mostly. Previous insights from Pornhub have included have revealed “lesbian” as the number one category – 186 per cent more likely to be searched for by women rather than men. Women are also 69 per cent more likely to be viewing gay porn than their male counterparts.
