3 St. Patrick’s Day Drinks That Aren’t Green Beer

St. Patrick’s day is here (March 17), and with it comes an onslaught of unnecessarily green consumables. I’ve honestly never been a fan of aggressively-dyed beer, not because I’m afraid of food colouring, but because the beer used is usually crap. If you want to celebrate St. Patrick’s day with an on-theme adult beverage that isn’t an emerald-hued beer, consider making (or ordering) one (or all) of the following.

St. Patrick’s Day cocktails

  • The Last Word: This classic cocktail gets its green from Green Chartreuse, a complex, herbaceous liqueur made by French monks who absolutely refuse to share their recipe. Though it tastes incredibly complex, this beverage is startlingly easy to make, and combines equal parts of gin, chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lime juice (22mlounc each, to be exact.) Just pour everything into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake it all up, and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a lime wedge or zest for an extra pop of festive colour.
  • The Grasshopper: A Grasshopper is basically the drinker’s answer to the Shamrock shake, and it is freaking tasty, my friends. Though most Grasshoppers are made with equal parts white crème de cacao, crème de menthe and heavy cream, I like to take my cue from The Drink Blog and get a little cognac in there. Just combine 28ml of each white crème de cacao and crème de menthe , along with 44ml each of cognac and heavy cream. Shake it all up with some ice, strain into a pretty glass, and top with chocolate shavings, if you are so inclined. (Boss move: Make your own crème de menthe.)
  • Southern Exposure: This cocktail — from the blog Honestly Yum — is the polar opposite of the Grasshopper, and gets its colour from a fresh-to-death mixture of lime juice, celery juice, and fresh mint. But don’t worry, this isn’t a health drink, because there’s gin in there, 45ml to be exact. Chuck that gin in a ice-filled shaker, along with 22ml of simple syrup, 22ml of celery juice, 15ml of lime juice and 7 mint leaves. Shake, shake, shake, strain, and garnish with another mint leaf.

If those don’t get you in the mood for Irish festivities, I guess you can try the green beer, or just drink whatever you usually would on a Friday night. That is always a good option.
