If you buy retail light stands, you can expect to pay around $30, which adds up when you use a three-point lighting system. This video by thefrugalfilmmaker walks you through the process of making one light stand in great detail. To begin, you need 3.05m of three-quarter-inch PVC pipe, four end caps, three T-joints, four couplers and a PVC cutter. If you plan on many projects involving PVC, a cutter is worth the extra couple bucks.
