iOS: Social anxiety can be debilitating, and even if you don't struggle with it completely, you probably still deal with some symptoms every now and then. If you have trouble leaving your comfort zone, Steps is a free app that can help you do it one task at a time.
When a stressful situation starts to make your anxiety kick in, it's easy for your brain to get lost down the worry rabbit hole. To counteract this, give yourself an anxiety routine to run through when you feel it creeping up.
The app presents you with a series of challenges in a few different categories, like "Stop worrying about what others think" and "Try something new". Pick a goal, and you'll get a task. Some of them are as simple as saying good morning to three people. Others might require a little more courage and time, like asking your coworker to go for a walk.
On Product Hunt, the app's co-founder Fabian Elhert, explained:
Unfortunately social anxiety is a highly underrated mental health issue, too seldomly addressed in society leading to a lack of awareness. But also for the ones who are aware of their mental health issues, can be hard to get treatment.
Doing things you are afraid of to overcome fear, is a known therapy method called exposure therapy. And it's proven to be the most efficient way to overcome social anxiety.
The app offers you a variety of challenges in curated sets, such creating friendships and handling rejection.
The app is only available on iOS at the moment, but iDareTo is a similar app for Android. Unfortunately, iDareTo isn't free and will cost $5.49. Like Steps, though, it gives you interactive, step-by-step tasks to complete for specific goals, like talking to strangers, going to parties and so on. You can check out iDareTo here for Android.
