Use Dropbox To Store A Mac’s Settings For Easy Configuration When You Get A New Computer

If you tend to set up a new Mac the exact same way as your old Mac, you know how tedious it can be to go and download files, tweak settings, and mess around with various preference panes. Blogger Jacob Salmela shows of a way to use Dropbox to save all those settings.

The idea here is to use Dropbox as a means to restore files and settings. In this case, that includes bash profiles, ssh folders, QuickLook plugs, screen savers, Automater workflows, and more. Some of this could be handled by iCloud, but Dropbox allows you more versatility and control. To do so, you’ll need to create symlinks for a variety of home folders, then create a script that handles the restore. It’s a little convoluted, but if you want to use Dropbox instead of Apple’s options, Salmela walks you through everything you need.
