You won’t believe this. You will gasp in surprise. Please sit down before you read the next sentence.

It turns out Australians really like sport.

So Google just released its Year In Search for 2016 — the Adam Sandler of years — and it turns out we tend to google a lot of things. A lot of those things tend to be sports related.

Other things we like to Google: Pokemon GO, politics, Donald Trump, Pauline Hanson…

Also: a lot of Australian people Googled ‘What Is Love?’ Hard to tell if they were going deep or trying to find a copy of Haddaway’s classic pop anthem from 1993.

Baby don’t hurt me.

No more.

Here’s the official overall top 10 things we were Googling in 2016…

Overall Searches (Trending)

1. US election

2. Olympics

3. Census

4. Euro 2016

5. Australian Open 2016

6. Pokemon Go

7. Donald Trump

8. iPhone 7

9. David Bowie

10. Prince

A couple of things surprise me: how big Euro 2016 was is prime among them. Kinda surprised the Australian Open is so big as well.

The top trending people of Google is also a little surprising…

5. Melania Trump

6. Meghan Markle

7. OJ Simpson

10. Brad Pitt

I mean Trump and Clinton is a given, but I was extremely surprised to see Conor McGregor ranked so highly. I’m a huge UFC fan (and a bit of a Conor fanboy) and it’s insane to see how mainstream he’s taken the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.

I don’t even know who Meghan Markle is. Maybe I should Google her.

Some more lists…

I honestly don’t understand why people are googling “what is the time?”

  • Mark, check out Suits on Netflix, it’s a great show. Megan plays one of the characters on there. Surely you have seen her name pop up in the opening credits if you’ve already watched it?

  • Mark I imagine a lot of these include the OK google’s as they are just a google search after all. ie: OK google…what is the time. Which you can do whilst listening to music through i wired headset with mic ,etc.
