Penetration testing (or pen testing) is basically a form of security research. Your goal as a pen tester is to identify weaknesses in a network’s security. Science Alert has this whole course that’s a great introduction to ethical hacking, and as of this writing, are offering over 16 hours of lessons for $US25 ($34).
Keep in mind that this course will not be enough to make you a qualified pen tester. Ethical hacking certifications, such as the Certified Penetration Tester or Certified Ethical Hacker, can cost hundreds of dollars.
And it’s often not as sexy as Mr. Robot makes things seem. If you truly have a knack and passion for IT security, becoming a professional pen tester is a sensible career option.
