How Movies Help Us Deal With Loss

Video: Losing someone is painful and world shattering and can almost feel impossible to endure. There’s no real way to prepare yourself and there’s no quick way to get over it but the fact is, everyone is going to have to deal with it at some point in their life. This video from CineFix is ostensibly a list about the 21 best character departures in film, but it’s really a video essay about how movies can help us deal with loss by providing templates in how to cope.

The list goes by quick, so it can get a little hard to keep up with. But whether you’ve lost someone, or something, or some experience, or some moment, or even yourself, it will give a movie counterpart that shows how it’s been dealt with in fiction so that it might help us out (even if it’s just a little) in reality.
