Google News Will Start Highlighting Fact Check Stories In Results

When the news constantly bombards you with statements and claims that you can’t verify, fact checkers become extremely important. To that end, Google will now surface fact check stories in Google News results.

As Google explains, fact check stories are a category label that the search engine applies much like “Opinion” or “In-Depth” to help you distinguish what type of article you’re looking at. Google itself doesn’t verify the claims therein, nor does it pick specific news outlets to surface (though the company does say that any news outlet that wants to be featured here should use its special fact check markup).

Ideally, this will help readers spot misinformation and get accurate sources for complex stories. As the US gets closer to election day it gets harder and harder to sort through every new story and claim that comes out, so this helps.
