Readability Is Shutting Down, Here’s How To Export Your Bookmarks To Instapaper Or Pocket

Bookmarking site Readability, one of the first read-it-later services, will shut down on September 30. After that, you won’t be able to access the articles you’ve saved. Here’s how to export your articles to Instapaper or Pocket.

Instapaper and Pocket both have their share of strengths and weaknesses, but whichever you choose, exporting out of Readability and into another service is a simple process.

Send Your Articles to Instapaper

  1. Head to the Readability export page and click “Export your data” at the bottom.
  2. You will eventually get an email with a link to a JSON file that includes your exported articles. This can take up to 48 hours. When you do get the email, download that file.
  3. Head to your User page on Instapaper and click “Import from Readability” then select the JSON file you just downloaded. This will import all your articles into Instapaper.

Send Your Articles to Pocket

For some reason, Pocket doesn’t support Readability imports directly, so you’ll need to jump through some hoops.

  1. Head to the Readability export page and click “Export your data” at the bottom.
  2. You will eventually get an email with a link to a JSON file that includes your exported articles. This can take up to 48 hours. Download that file.
  3. Head to the Readability 2 Pocket page and paste your JSON file in, then click the convert button.
  4. Copy the contents and save it as an HTML file using a text editor.
  5. Head to the Import Instapaper into Pocket page on Pocket, then upload the HTML file.

That’s it, you’ll now be able to use your new bookmarking service with all those Readability links included.
