Breathing is so easy on land that we don’t think about it, but in the water, we have to coordinate our whole body just to grab a breath of air. This video can help you fix some of the ways you may be making this task even harder than it needs to be. The breakdown, aimed at beginner swimmers but useful to anyone who feels that their freestyle breathing isn’t perfect, gives you four tips:
- Keep one goggle in the water when you turn to breathe. This way you can be sure you’re only turning your head, and not disrupting your hips and legs as well.
- Look diagonally behind you when you bring your face out of the water. If you think about looking to the side, instead, you’re likely to pull your head up, which isn’t good for your body’s position in the water.
- Exhale. Holding your breath is a beginner mistake that makes swimming harder.
- Exhale through your nose, specifically. This way it’s easy to breathe in through your mouth when you come up for air.
