Classic Hacks: How To Instantly Reduce Dark Rings Under Your Eyes

They say that your eyes are a window of the soul — so it’s best not to frame them with the unsightly dark rings of a corpse. If you feel perennially exhausted and bleary-eyed, these tried-and-tested maintenance tips will help to keep your peepers looking fresh (even when you feel like death warmed up.)

We originally reported on this hack all the way back in 2009, which comes from DIY weblog WikiHow. Obviously, the best way to look bright-eyed and well rested is to eat healthily and get an adequate amount of sleep.

This is easier said than done for most full-time workers, though. Thankfully, there are a few simple tricks you can employ to get the “fresh eye” look without drastically changing your lifestyle.

To instantly reduce dark circles, freeze a wet cotton swab overnight and then gently wipe under the affected areas of the eye. Need an even quicker fix? Try taking a cold, damp washcloth and squeezing out the excess droplets over your closed eyes. (For best results, try not to flinch!)

If this doesn’t help, the culprit might be too much salt in your diet. As WikiHow explains:

Excess salt causes the body to retain water in unusual places, and this can result in puffiness under the eyes. Too much salt can also impair your circulation, and cause the blood vessels under the skin to appear bluer.
