The Australian Signals Directorate has confirmed that no data was compromised amidst the Census debacle of the past couple of days.
The intelligence agency’s confirmation was part of a short statement released by IBM Australia to the media only a short time ago. “We genuinely regret the inconvenience that has occurred,” IBM Australia’s statement began. “IBM’s priority over the last two days was to work with the ABS to restore the Census site. We are committed to our role in the delivery of this project.”
“Continuing to maintain the privacy and security of personal information is paramount. The Australian Signals Directorate has confirmed no data was compromised. Our cyber-security experts are partnering with national intelligence agencies to ensure the ongoing integrity of the site.”
The statement comes after a bevy of public criticism was directed at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, IBM Australia and the confused messaging as millions of Australians have struggled to complete the compulsory Census. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he was “bitterly disappointed” and that the saga was “absolutely a failure” on the part of the statistics bureau.
