Know When To Stop Perfecting Your Product When You’re Launching Your Start-Up

You’ve got a great start-up idea and you’ve been working on your product for the past eight months now but it’s just not quite up to scratch yet. You need to know when to stop otherwise you’ll never be able to launch your start-up.

Perfectionism used to be viewed as a positive trait but there’s more evidence that it’s a characteristic that could be damaging to people’s careers. It is also something that could be holding start-up founders back.

Over at Entrepreneur, start-up coach Ehsan Jahandarpour talked about pre-launch steps that are essential for those kicking off their own businesses. One of those steps is to know when to stop ‘improving’ on the product:

“The ultimate goal of perfectionists is to beat their competitors by developing a perfect product. Sure there is no measurement for perfection, the only thing that keeps happening is they keep revising their product and adding features to make it better at the cost of forgetting to market and grow their business.”

It’s important to engage in market research as you’re developing your product, Jahandarpour said, as well as adopting lean and agile development methodologies:

“Building a minimum viable product (MVP) and releasing it to a group of volunteers to provide feedback enables you to understand what features matter the most to customers. This way, while you can develop your product in different sprints, you have the time to adapt to market demand and market your business.”

  • A lot of newer businesses have the issue where they make there product then put a price on it. You really need to work the other way and find your price point in your market then develop your product to that.
