Canned beans are the ultimate in convenience, but they can be a little lacklustre. To transform these plain Jane legumes into something sexier, just simmer them in some good olive oil for a few minutes.

This tip, which comes from An Everlasting Meal by Tamar Adler, infuses bland beans with flavour, and boosts their texture to a creamier place. Simply drain the beans, dump them in a sauce pan and add a good amount of tasty olive oil. Add in aromatics if you’re fancy, and let it all simmer for about 10 or 15 minutes. Once they’re done, they’re ready to be spooned over buttery toast, stirred into some simple pasta or eaten all by themselves out of a bowl.
