Turn Leftover Herbs Into DIY Incense

Turn Leftover Herbs Into DIY Incense

If you grow your own herbs, like sage and rosemary, you probably get more than you can use by cooking. Don’t let them — and all those great aromatics — go to waste. Turn them into DIY incense (AKA smudge sticks).

You’ll use up those extra herbs and have free, great smelling incense to use at home or give as a gift. All you need are some fresh herbs (sage, rosemary and lavender work especially well, even if you get them from the grocery store) and some cotton twine or string.

Wrap the herbs in a bundle (specific instructions at the link below, but you get the gist from the photo above) and hang it to air dry in a cool spot. This will take a few weeks, so plan ahead if you want to give your incense as a gift. Light the bundle, them blow out the flame so it’s just smouldering to use it. You can also use the bundle as a fire starter; it will add fragrant notes to the smoke from the fire.
