These Are The Essential Items That Should Be In Every ‘Bug-Out Bag’

A “bug-out bag” or emergency go-bag is something everyone should have in their home or vehicle (or both). When disaster strikes, you’ll be glad you have these survival items pre-packed and ready to go.

In this video from the Business Insider YouTube channel, survival expert Tim Macwelch, author of How To Survive Anything, shows you everything you should include in your own bug-out bag. In no particular order, your bug-out bag should include:

  • A lightweight set of clothing
  • Water bottle with a built-in filter
  • Duct tape
  • Small first-aid kit
  • Survival rations
  • Space blankets
  • A poncho
  • A small supply of drinkable water (and expandable containers that can hold more water)
  • A pair of sturdy gloves, goggles and other protective equipment
  • A headlamp with spare batteries
  • Iodine drops for disinfecting wounds and water
  • A local map and compass
  • A signal whistle and mirror
  • Travel hygiene products
  • A fire-starting kit that provides multiple ways to start a fire
  • A folding knife

With those items, you should be able to survive most emergency situations. An emergency phone charger and radio wouldn’t hurt either. When it comes to the actual bag you choose, Macwelch recommends you go with a bag that doesn’t look like a bug-out bag. That will keep people from trying to steal it in an emergency.
