For a decent chunk of people, having a car that is “fun to drive” is an essential motivator during the purchasing process. But according to new Roy Morgan research, the cars that seem the most fun, or perhaps have invested in the image of fun, are not rated at the top in that category.

Unsurprisingly, when people who wanted a “fun” car were surveyed on what they thought they’d like, a lot of premium brands were at the top of the list. Who wouldn’t want a new Porsche?
But while BMW and Audi topped the list of cars we expect to be fun, the king brand of cars that are actually fun to drive is Volkswagen, based on a survey on people driving those brands. Subaru came in just behind. I know, right?
Toyota, Nissan, and Ford were all rated as a lot less fun than people expected them to be, whereas the big surprise of the show is Skoda, which apparently no one expected would be fun but turned out to be a blast. Check out the full results below.

Okay, I’ll bite.
First, there’s got to be a lot of deviation between the models of car. For example, a 1999 Subaru WRX STI is going to be a lot more fun to drive than a brand new Liberty 2.5i. Same with BMW – a M4 convertible is going to be a bit more fun than a X5 3.0d.
So, since I don’t see a lot of VW Miltivans going sideways around corners in suburban streets, which are these VW’s which are perceived to be fun, and which are actually fun?
I’ve heard that Golf & Jetta are fun to drive. The Beetle is probably fun to own as well, though I would guess doesn’t drive the same.
I would imagine that the GTI Golf and Polo would be reasonably far up on the list. (As well as the Golf R of course)
i have a land rover defender, that thing is fun to drive. maybe not the easiest thing but fun fun fun
The “fun” of a car is not just the driving.
It’s also how your wallet feels after paying registration, insurance, and servicing.
Do you worry about your baby getting scratched while parked at the supermarket?
Most of the cars advertised as “fun” on TV are econoboxes, so no surprise there.
A lot of cheap cars are fun, and all of these manufacturers have fun cars. A golf GTI is fun, a Scirocco R is fun. My Toyota 86 is fun, and a WRX is a lot of fun.
Even the lads from top gear who drive lambos all day long love a cheap thrill.
I’ve had the pleasure of driving many of these branded vehicles. Ford, Audi, Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, BMW, Holden, Hyundai.
I will say that Audi has been the best so far, with a Mitsubishi Lancer a close second which is much lower down on the list there.
