If You Need Creative Ideas, Start Thinking Inside The Box

“Think outside the box” has to be one of the least creative phrases in the world. Not just because it’s overused, but because it’s often wrong. If you’re struggling to come up with creative ideas, what you may need is a box.

As aerospace Ph.D and motivational speaker Dr Dragos explains in the video above, we all find ourselves in creative boxes of some kind. The place we’re born, the opportunities available to us and the resources we have all constrain us. Those boxes are limiting, but they also force us to get creative. When the obvious solution isn’t available, you have to come up with an new one.

In many situations, limitations can actually improve creativity. Rather than trying to escape the constraints you find yourself in, working around them can help you come up with new ideas. If you’re staring at a blank canvas trying to come up with a clever idea for something to create, begin by constraining yourself.
